Week 6
Introduction: In the story there is a tradition every year that they have a lottery, and the winner of the lottery gets stoned to death. First, the leader of each household picks a card out of a black box, then whatever family has the dot on their card has to then pick again to see who will be stoned out of their family. As this is going on the children run around gathering the stones for the murder. Argument: There are tons of different traditions in America, and a lot of them are fun, and family oriented, but not all of them. America has a tradition of mass shootings within the country. Whether it be in a school, church, at a concert or sporting event, Americans don't always feel safe. Recently there was the biggest mass shooting ever, a man killed about 58 people and injured 489 others when he opened fire on a country music festival going on in Las Vegas. The gunman had an arsenal of 23 weapons, including semiautomatic rifles, scopes and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, much of which could be legally purchased in Nevada. Another 19 weapons were found at the shooter's house in Mesquite, Nevada. America makes up just 5% of the global population but houses 31% of the world's mass shooters since 1966. Before Sunday, the 2016 Orlando attack was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history, with 49 people killed. In 2012, Adam Lanza went on a shooting spree in Newtown, Connecticut, killing his mother before murdering 26 students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School; in 2007, 32 people were killed in the Virginia Tech massacre. This pattern that has occurred with Mass Shootings makes it like a tradition to AmericaNarrative: When I was younger my grandparents, nunu and nana, lived down the street from my family and I. We would always go over their house to have dinner, swim, and hang out. When my father passed away the tradition kind of slipped away, we continued to go have dinner there and hang out, until my mom found a new boyfriend. My mom was a single mother of two kids, and had recently been widowed, so she needed help, and she began to talk to someone within a year of my father passing and it made my grandparents mad. After my mom and her new boyfriend started talking more we started to get more distant from my grandparents, and the the tradition faded. I rarely see my grandparents told, which is partly my fault because we still talk just not a lot of social interaction. My parents, and my aunt and uncle used to own a house together in Ocean City, New Jersey, and the same thing happened with them and we ended up selling the house to the outright.

Week 5
Introduction: In this blog post we read “Hills Like White Elephants” and were faced with a question and had to decide based off of the information presented to us throughout the story. That question being, do you think that the woman decided to keep the child, and do you think she left her boyfriend or not? Argument: This story takes place in at a railroad junction between Barcelona, and Madrid in 1927. There is a male and a female and they sat down for a drink while they waited for the train. As they are drinking they get into a discussion about their baby, as we figured out from context clues throughout the story. The discussion is whether or not they should keep the child that they accidentally brought upon themselves. The male seems to not want the woman to keep the baby, and even says “I think it's the best thing to do” talking about getting an abortion, but insists many time “I don't want you to do it if you really don't want to.” The woman on the other hand seems like she does want to keep the child by the way she talks to the male throughout the story. For these reason I think that she ended up keeping the child, and leaving the man. Week 4
Introduction: In this blog post the Wang family is faced with a difficult decision. They are on the edge about whether or not they should tell the grandmother who has different beliefs that she supposedly has only 3 month left to live. Would you tell your grandmother if she going to die? Argument: I do not agree with the families decision to not tell the grandmother. I disagree because I think that she deserves to know the truth about her illness. I understand that in her culture that is what they do, but i just feel like she should know. She would have been able to maybe get more treatment if she did know. If I were in her shoes I would want to know what was going on, and would not want to be in the blind. Even if they thought they were "saving her" by keeping it a secret, and even if thats what she wanted I still believe that she deserved to know the truth about her own health. If i were in the same position and I was the one that was about to die I would want to know because of the way I was raised, and my cultural perspective. Narrative: One time in my senior year of high school one of my friends asked me to drive him to Philadelphia for some reason. We were friends and hangout, but he wasnt one of my closest friends because of stuff he did. I asked him why he needed to go there and he wouldn’t really tell me what he needed to go to Philly for. I then decided to make up a lie that I had to do something else instead of driving him because I was unsure what he what going to be doing and he would not give me a clear answer. This lead to him getting mad about me lying to him but I was unsure if it would be a safe environment so i believe I made the right decision. In the end we are still friends and this only effected our relationship as friends for a couple of days. Week 3
Introduction: Margaret was an African American and she worked for a very racist lady named Mrs. Cullinan. Mrs. Cullinan came from wealthy parents and all though there wasn't slavery at the time she had servants. Mrs. Cullinan was very meticulous about all of the things in her house, and had certain rules that had to be followed. Mrs. Cullinan gave Margaret a name that was shorter, which to her was a form of utter disrespect. This caused to her to get really mad and break Mrs. Cullinans favorite casserole dish and coffee cups that were passed down from her mother. Argument: I do agree with Margarets decision to break the casserole dish and two green glass cups, because she needed to let the anger out. Mrs. Cullinan puts her through a lot and what she does is not right. Margaret feels disrespected when Mrs. Cullinans keeps calling her by the name Mary. In the passage, Margaret talked about being "called out of name", and how it was a hellish horror. The casserole dish and two green cups symbolize Margaret breaking free from the work. She was tired of the hell like conditions and she took a stand. Week 2
