Week 6
Introduction: In the story there is a tradition every year that they have a lottery, and the winner of the lottery gets stoned to death. First, the leader of each household picks a card out of a black box, then whatever family has the dot on their card has to then pick again to see who will be stoned out of their family. As this is going on the children run around gathering the stones for the murder. Argument: There are tons of different traditions in America, and a lot of them are fun, and family oriented, but not all of them. America has a tradition of mass shootings within the country. Whether it be in a school, church, at a concert or sporting event, Americans don't always feel safe. Recently there was the biggest mass shooting ever, a man killed about 58 people and injured 489 others when he opened fire on a country music festival going on in Las Vegas. The gunman had an arsenal of 23 weapons, including semiautomatic rifles, scopes and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, much of which could be legally purchased in Nevada. Another 19 weapons were found at the shooter's house in Mesquite, Nevada. America makes up just 5% of the global population but houses 31% of the world's mass shooters since 1966. Before Sunday, the 2016 Orlando attack was the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history, with 49 people killed. In 2012, Adam Lanza went on a shooting spree in Newtown, Connecticut, killing his mother before murdering 26 students and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School; in 2007, 32 people were killed in the Virginia Tech massacre. This pattern that has occurred with Mass Shootings makes it like a tradition to AmericaNarrative: When I was younger my grandparents, nunu and nana, lived down the street from my family and I. We would always go over their house to have dinner, swim, and hang out. When my father passed away the tradition kind of slipped away, we continued to go have dinner there and hang out, until my mom found a new boyfriend. My mom was a single mother of two kids, and had recently been widowed, so she needed help, and she began to talk to someone within a year of my father passing and it made my grandparents mad. After my mom and her new boyfriend started talking more we started to get more distant from my grandparents, and the the tradition faded. I rarely see my grandparents told, which is partly my fault because we still talk just not a lot of social interaction. My parents, and my aunt and uncle used to own a house together in Ocean City, New Jersey, and the same thing happened with them and we ended up selling the house to the outright.
